There is no shortage of high quality economics research. There are of course academic journals in economics. However, journals usually require a subscription unless the journal is open access. Despite this, there are many places to locate working papers for free, these papers are often the first version of the papers that eventually get published in economic journals after a peer review process. We particularly recommend 
scholar.google.com as a starting point to locate papers. Below are places to find some of the best economics research on the internet.

This is a fantastic resource to locate leading economics research. You input a term for the research area and it then gives you links to publications in that area by the number of times they are cited. You can change the date to find more recent papers which are generally less cites. You can also locate papers by author.
